Jeremy Lucas
School: Franklin Regional
Sport: Soccer
Class: Junior
Claim to fame: Lucas, who factored in all seven shutouts this season, recorded two shutouts last week for Franklin Regional in Section 4-AAAA wins over Connellsville, 1-0, and Kiski Area, 3-0.
“My team, the defense especially, has kept me out of action since I've had a bad back. But I've had to step up in some big situations this year,” Lucas said.
How is this year's team different from teams in previous seasons?
We are very mature team that is passing the ball and possessing the ball. We have a lot of juniors and seniors with experience. We play better as team because no one thinks they are better than the team.
What has been the key to the team's success defensively?
Passing the ball and getting teams tired in the beginning of the games. They keep possession and don't get too much pressure on the goal.
How do you think the schedule this season could prepare you for a playoff run?
I think it will prepare us for the tough competition as we had close and tough games this year.
What do you like most about goalkeeping?
I like the pressure and the adrenalin rush. If you don't make a mistake or let in any goals, your team can't loose.
What is your favorite candy?
Skittles. I'm really in favor of sugar and there is a ton of it in Skittles.
Rachel Horrell
School: Ligonier Valley
Sport: Volleyball
Class: Senior
Claim to fame: Horrell recorded 23 kills, four blocks and 10 service points, including one ace to lead Ligonier Valley (10-4) to a 3-2 win over Homer-Center on Oct. 12. Horrell has recorded 123 kills, 19 blocks and 78 service points, including 21 aces, this season.
“My performance against Homer dealt with me stepping up for my team. They really shocked us, and I had to step up for the team. I wanted to have a fun season. I'm just focusing on just playing the game,” Horrell said.
What are your college plans?
I was being recruited for track and field and some things have come up for volleyball. My parents don't know where I will decide to go, but I plan on signing on Nov. 8.
What made you join the ROTC program?
I'm the chaplain, which is the fourth in command. My sister influenced me in doing it since she did it, as well. I really have ended up liking it.
What is your earliest memory of volleyball?
I have been playing with the same girls since the seventh or eighth grade. I just remember learning the basics.
What aspects of volleyball do you like compared to track and field?
Track is more of a team sport, but it's more individualized. I'm a jumper so it's up to me on how I jump. I like how in volleyball you have to all work together and not have all the pressure on yourself.
What was your favorite Halloween costume?
Last (week), I went to a Halloween party and I went as an avocado. I would say that's the best one yet. Everyone loved it.
