Westmoreland athletes of the week: Ligonier Valley’s Ethan Boring, Yough’s Kierra Waywood

Ethan Boring

School: Ligonier Valley

Sport: Baseball

Year: Sophomore

Claim to fame: Boring went 2 for 3 with two home runs, including a grand slam, and seven RBIs to lead Ligonier Valley (11-6, 8-3) to a 14-1 win over Saltsburg in Heritage Conference action May 3. Boring is batting .349 with four doubles, 21 RBIs and 11 runs scored.

“We kind of started off slow with all the rain. I feel like I'm hitting a hot spot as we head into playoffs. We're hitting and pitching really well this year,” Boring said.

What has been your favorite moment of the season and why?

I would say the Homer-Center or Saltsburg games. In the Homer-Center game, I saw the team and spark and come together as team. In the Saltsburg game, it was nice for all us to bond and be the dominant team.

What is the feeling like to hit a grand slam?

It felt like it was in my Little League days. It was amazing as I'm going around third base and slapping hands with Coach Jones and seeing my teammates' smiles. It was heartwarming. It's like a kid opening a gift on Christmas day.

What normally goes through your mind at the plate?

Whenever I step into the batters box, I like to be confident as possible. I like to have fun with it, and no one is going to beat me.

What is your favorite sport — football, wrestling or baseball — and why?

Baseball. I feel like I excel more in baseball, and it's a lot of fun to come out on the field with all my brothers.

What's your favorite type of music?

I'm more of an alternative music kind of guy.

Kierra Waywood

School: Yough

Sport: Softball

Year: Junior

Claim to fame: Waywood threw a two-hitter with five strikeouts as No. 2 Yough (15-3, 12-0) defeated West Mifflin, 10-0, in five innings in Section 2-4A action April 30. Waywood threw a one-hitter with four strikeouts in a 2-1 win over South Fayette on May 3.

“I think we played really well actually. The Elizabeth Forward game was for supporting my little cousin, Joe Waywood. He's what pushed me through the game,” Waywood said.

What was the key to the team's eight-game winning streak earlier this season?

We go out there and work together as team. If we play together as a team we know we will produce. Once someone gets a hit it's contagious. We are there as sisters for each other. We have that trust and friendship that we play lax, and we know that we got this.

What can the team learn from the loss to Norwin as you head toward the playoffs?

We hit the ball so there wasn't much we did wrong. We had a few errors, but who doesn't make errors. We hit the ball, but it was just hit at people.

Who do you look forward to facing every year?

I value each team the same. I don't get overly excited for anybody. If I had to pick my best battles, I would say Mt. Pleasant and Elizabeth Forward because I have friends on those teams from travel ball.

How has your game grown this season?

I grew better as a pitcher. I had to buckle down. I pitched last year, but I needed to buckle down now so we can have the seven seniors go out with a bang. I have been playing with them since I was 7.

What is your favorite cartoon?

“Kim Possible.” I thought she was pretty cool.
