Derry's track and field teams had a strong showing at the United Invitational in Armaugh.

Shawn Broadway won the 110- (14.9 seconds) and 300-meter (40.3) hurdles, and Will Huss took first in the 100 meters (11.2). Huss also took second in the 200 and 400.

The boys 1,600-meter relay won in a meet-record time of 3 minutes, 32.8 seconds. It consists of Will Huss, Justin Huss, Broadway and Elias Kott.

Junior Mary Trinclisti won the 3,200 in 12:35 to pace the Trojans.

Tara Perry finished third in the 100 hurdles, and her sister, Leah, was fifth. The twin sisters were 1-2 in the high jump, with Tara setting a school record at 5 feet, 2 inches.

The boys team finished third after winning the last two titles at the event. The girls, also trying to defend their trophy, finished sixth.

Both teams are 6-0 against Section 4-AA competition.

Derry coach Mark Curcio said Trinclisti was disqualified in the 1,600 but quickly rebounded and said, “Oh, well. I'll just try again next year.”

Derry will compete at the Butler Invitational on Friday.

Fenton honored

Latrobe junior outside hitter Reed Fenton was named the Western Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association Class AAA Player of the Week.

As far as the association's latest rankings, Penn-Trafford remains No. 2 in Class AAA, and Hempfield is No. 6, Norwin No. 8 and Latrobe No. 9.

Derry is No. 2 in Class AA.

Norwin upset Penn-Trafford on Tuesday, 3-1.

Roundball changes

There have been changes to rosters for the Roundball Classic basketball all-star games Friday and Saturday at Geneva.

Seneca Valley's Chris Hart was moved from the boys East team to the Class 6A team.

The following seniors won't play: Sam Parini of Fairview (District 10), Malik Edmundson of Serra Catholic (2A), George Mike IV of Seton LaSalle (3A) and T.J. Banks of East Allegheny (3A).

One player was added: Burrell's Donovan Russell (3A).

Hempfield record falls

Hempfield senior Eudel Moreta won a pair of events, one in record fashion, last week at the Lady Spartan/Wildcat Invitational at Latrobe's Memorial Stadium.

Moreta ran 22.16 seconds in the 200 to take down the school record set by Joey Borsuk in 2012 (22.21). Consider: Thomas Jefferson's Zach Wagner won the WPIAL 200 title last season in 22.37.

Moreta, a Wheeling Jesuit recruit, also won the 100. He also has the school record in that event (11.03).

Softball dominance

While it's not exactly a surprise, a number of area softball teams have dominated their opponents early on this season.

Class 6A No. 2 Latrobe (5-0) has outscored the opposition 58-1.

Mt. Pleasant, the No. 1 team in Class 4A, also is 5-0 and has outscored teams 50-2.

And Class 6A No. 1 Hempfield (5-0) has 45 runs compared to five allowed — all by Norwin.

Hempfield plays at Latrobe on Monday.
