The number of Division I colleges interested in adding John Wetzel to their defensive backfield keeps growing.

Wetzel, a junior at Latrobe, pulled in three more scholarship offers, bringing his total to 13.

Buffalo, Eastern Michigan and Monmouth extended offers to Wetzel, a 6-foot, 195-pound safety who also plays quarterback for the Wildcats.

His other offers are Boston College, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Akron, Lehigh, Marshall, Old Dominion, Delaware, Temple and Kent State.

Wetzel has a list of visits planned for the spring, including Cincinnati, Marshall, West Virginia, Villanova, Penn State and others.

“And I still might have a couple more,” he said. “I want to commit before the season so I can focus on what the real goal is.”

Wetzel helped guide Latrobe to an 8-4 record last season and a trip to the WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinals. The resurgent Wildcats will bump up to 5A next season.

Wetzel had 53 tackles and three interceptions. He threw for 1,194 yards and 14 touchdowns and rushed for a team-high 989 yards and 15 TDs.
