What to watch for in WPIAL sports on April 11, 2024: Class 6A baseball teams look to sweep

There will be several brooms out in Class 6A baseball Thursday as four teams go for the sweep of their three-game weekly section series.

In Section 1-6A, both North Allegheny (2-0, 5-0) and Pine-Richland (3-1, 7-2) look to remain perfect this week.

The Tigers host Butler (1-4, 3-5) in the hopes of a third straight win over the Golden Tornado while the Rams try to make it two straight victories over Allderdice (0-4, 1-5). The Rams and Dragons conclude their series on Friday.

In Section 2-6A, Hempfield (5-0, 9-0) looks to complete its sweep on the road while Canon-McMillan (3-2, 3-4) will be home looking for a section series sweep.

The Spartans are visiting Baldwin (0-4, 1-7) while the Big Macs battle Norwin (2-2, 4-4).

The one 6A series that concludes Thursday with a rubber game will be defending champion Mt. Lebanon (3-2, 6-3) visiting Central Catholic (1-4, 4-5).

The Blue Devils won in eight innings on Monday, 7-3, while the Vikings responded with a road victory on Tuesday, 8-4.

Fight for first

Early possession of first place is up for grabs in a pair of WPIAL softball sections Thursday.

In Section 3-4A, North Catholic (4-1) visits Hampton (3-1).

Both the Trojans and Talbots won their section openers, but while Hampton beat Montour on Wednesday to improve to 2-0, North Catholic fell to Chartiers Valley and is now 1-1.

In Section 1-2A, Laurel (3-2) visits Neshannock (3-0).

The Lancers blanked Shenango on Wednesday to move to 2-0 atop the section while the Spartans are a half-game back at 1-0 in the seven-team section.

Volley for first

South Fayette is alone in first place in Section 3-2A in WPIAL boys volleyball.

The Lions are 4-0 in the section, one game ahead of both Trinity and Thomas Jefferson.

The green machine could either remain alone on top or possibly drop into a three-way tie for first following their match Thursday.

South Fayette is home to Trinity.

If the Hillers win on the road and TJ wins at South Park, there would be a three-way tie for the top spot closing in on the halfway point of section play.
