WPIAL basketball playoffs roundup for Feb. 27: Mars beats Trinity to reach WPIAL final

The Mars boys basketball team will play for its first WPIAL championship.
Thanks to a 30-point performance from Notre Dame recruit Robby Carmody, the top-seeded Fightin' Planets earned a 56-39 victory over No. 5 Trinity in a WPIAL Class 5A semifinal at Baldwin on Tuesday night.
Andrew Recchia added 10 points for Mars (20-4), which will play No. 3 Franklin Regional (20-4) in the championship game at 9 p.m. Friday at Petersen Events Center.
Mars led 23-18 at halftime and used a 15-7 run in the third quarter to pull away.
Joey Koroly had 10 points for Trinity (20-5).
Sewickley Academy 65, Chartiers-Houston 33 — Top-seeded Sewickley Academy (20-4) will get a chance to defend its title after earning a WPIAL Class 2A semifinal victory at Northgate.
Isiah Warfield and Isaiah Smith each scored 18 points for the Panthers, who opened a 22-7 lead before going on a 22-0 run in the second quarter.
Sewickley Academy will play No. 2 OLSH (22-2) in the championship game at 5 p.m. Friday at Petersen Events Center.
Cameron Hanley had 12 points to lead No. 5 Chartiers-Houston (19-6).
Girls basketball
Peters Township 55, Bethel Park 39 — Mackenna Marisa poured in 25 points and Lillian Young added 14 as No. 2 Peters Township (21-3) won a WPIAL Class 6A semifinal at Baldwin.
The Indians will play No. 1 North Allegheny (24-0) in the championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday at Petersen Events Center.
Madelyn Dziezgowski and Olivia Westphal each had nine points for No. 3 Bethel Park (17-6).
Winchester Thurston 56, Sewickley Academy 40 — Led by Gia Thorpe's 28 points, top-seeded Winchester Thurston (18-5) cruised to a WPIAL Class A semifinal win at Northgate.
Defending champion Winchester Thurston will play West Greene in the championship game at 3 p.m. Friday at Petersen Events Center.
Sam Smith had nine points to lead No. 4 Sewickley Academy (14-6).
West Greene 66, Quigley Catholic 59 — McKenna Lampe had 15 points as No. 2 West Greene (22-2) won a WPIAL Class A semifinal at Peters Township. The Pioneers are the first Greene County girls basketball team to reach the WPIAL title game.
Elizabeth Brudnock scored 14 points, and Madison Lampe and Kaitlyn Rizor each added 13 points for West Greene.
Taylor Kirschner had 27 points for No. 3 Quigley Catholic (15-9).
