For the second and final time this season, a WPIAL Class Quad-A game slipped into the Saturday schedule as the annual homecoming game at Shaler joined a list of three of the ‘regulars’ hosting Saturday afternoon high school football. While overcast skies replaced brilliant sunshine in the second half of these four contests, these players continued to shine bright al afternoon long.
Lucas Dubyak and Tim Vernick – Butler
Butler had a lot of success on the ground in their Class AAAA Northern Eight Conference matinee at Shaler to the tune of 430 yards, most of which were gathered by Lucas Dubyak and Tim Vernick. Dubyak rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns while Vernick added 121 yards on the ground and two scores as the Golden Tornado handed the Titans their 26th consecutive loss 42-7.
Darrien Fields – Aliquippa
The expected rout was on with the very first play from scrimmage. Aliquippa quarterback Darrien Fields hit on 6 of 7 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns, including a 78-yard strike on the very first play from scrimmage as the mercy rul and good sportsmanship were the only things that could slow down the undefeated Quips in a Class AA Midwestern Athletic Conference rout of the host Summit Academy Knights 49-14.
Terrell Canady – Jeannette
There were no surprises on this fourth Saturday at historic Graham Field in Wilkinsburg as undefeated Jeannette turned the host inside-out and every which way but loose. Leading the way for the Jayhawks was Terrell Canady, who scored on an 8-yard run, on a 13-yard pass from Julian Batts and on a 66-yard punt return as the ‘Hawks flew pas the Tigers 58-16 in a mercy rule Class A Eastern Conference tilt.
Hunter Roknich – Western Beaver
It has been a tough season for Western Beaver. A preseason Top Ten team, they were still hunting for their first victory in Week Four when their senior quarterback showed his leadership skills. having to leave the game twice because of a bum ankle, Roknich somehow hit 8 of 15 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown and added 94 yards in rushing, plus he scored the game tying touchdown on a 1-yard run with just over one minute left as the Golden Beavers added the two-point conversion and held on for a 30-28 Class A Big 7 Conference thriller over the Vincentian Academy Royals.
