WPIAL Saturday’s Scholastic Starz for 9/27

On a picturesque evening at Dormont Stadium, the only WPIAL game on the fifth Saturday of the 2014 season took place. The stakes were high with five teams, Fort Cherry, Brentwood, Northgate and the two teams slated for Saturday  night, Chartiers-Houston and Bishop Canevin all muddled together with one game separating the five in the battle for the final two playoff spots in the Black Hills Conference. One game, but double the stars as they raised the Jolly Roger in Washington County.

Alex Ferrari – Chartiers-Houston

In a game where moving the ball on the ground was a struggle, Chartiers-Houston senior quarterback Alec Ferrari showed a lot of patience while playing mistake free football. Ferrari hit on 12 of 19 passes for 163 yards, plus added 44 yards rushing for over 200 total yards in leading the Buccaneers to their third consecutive victory and lifting them into a tie for third place with Fort Cherry in the victory over Bishop Canevin.

Mike Cushma – Chartiers-Houston

The Chartiers-Houston juniors booming right leg made a difference on so many levels. His big kickoffs kept Bishop Canevin in very modest to poor drive starting field position while a couple of his punts also swung field position in favor of the Bucs. But the obvious difference was his four field goals of 32, 24, 25 and 29 yards proved to be the difference as the Buccaneers knocked off the host Crusaders 26-14.
