WPIAL Swimming Championships Day One Results

The first day of the two day WPIAL swimming championships from the University of Pittsburgh are in the books. Day Two can be heard Friday on MSA Sports with Class AA at 10:00am and Class AAA at 3:00pm. Here is a recap from both the Class AA meets and Class AAA races on Thursday.
WPIAL Class AAA Boys and Girls Swimming Finals – Day 1:
Trees Pool on the University of Pittsburgh’s campus played host to the WPIAL Class AAA Boys and Girls Swimming Championships. The first day of competition crowned the top teams in the 200 yard medley and the 200 yard freestyle relay. Individual competitors swam for top honors in the 200 yard freestyle, 200 yard medley, 50 yard freestyle and the 100 yard butterfly. In addition to each winning team or individual receiving awards, at the end of day two of competition the team with the most cumulative points will take home overall team supremacy.
After one day of competition for the girls Upper St. Clair sits in third place with 114.5 points, Oakland Catholic is comfortably in second place with a one day total of 134 points and North Allegheny is running away with 253 points. The boys totals were not calculated right away, but full results are available at MSASports.net. One record did fall in AAA individual competition, Leah Smith of Oakland Catholic topped her previous WPIAL record of 1:47.64 with a time of 1:45.81 in the 200 yard freestyle. In team competition, North Allegheny girls not only leads the field, but they found a way to beat themselves. They bested both the 200 yard freestyle and medley relay records. In the 200 yard freestyle relay NA improved their WPIAL record set last year of 1:35.01, shaving off .08 seconds with a time of 1:34.93. In the 200 yard medley NA set the only PIAA record of the day. Setting the WPIAL record last year, but falling short of the PIAA record set in 2009 by Emmaus with a time of 1:44.28. This year NA took the record from Emmaus posting a time of 1:43.38. Tomorrow will be action packed featuring the 100 yard freestyle, 500 yard freestyle, 100 yard back and breast stroke and the final event, the 400 freestyle relay.

After one day of competition for the boys Mars and Blackhawk High School are tied for third place with 89 points, Beaver Area High School is in second with 101 points and holding the top spot is Indiana with 148 points. For the girls Indiana sits in third place with 123 points, West Allegheny is comfortably in second place with a one day total of 131.5 points and South Fayette is in the drivers seat with 157 points. One record did fall in AA competition, Margaret Gruber of Mars topped her previous WPIAL record of 54.63 with a time of 53.88 in the 100 yard butterfly. Tomorrow will be action packed featuring the 100 yard freestyle, 500 yard freestyle, 100 yard back and breast stroke and the final event, the 400 freestyle relay.
