WPIAL Week Six Saturday’s Scholastic Starz

The sun was shining bright Saturday afternoon, even though the mercury did not reach the 70's as has been the case the last week or so. For that matter, most temps didn't even make it into the 60's, but nonetheless, each of the five WPIAL football games played had a player heat up the gridiron with a winning effort on the first Saturday in October.

Luke Brumbaugh – Seton-LaSalle

How would Seton-LaSalle bounce back after their first taste of defeat in 2012 a week earlier? Quite nicely thank you, thanks in large part to another day at the office for stellar senior quarterback Luke Brumbaugh, Brumbaugh hit on 8 of 11 passes for 247 yards (a nearly 31 yard per completion average) and four touchdown tosses as the Rebels routed the host Burgettstown Blue Devils 49-7 in a Class AA Century Conference matchup that keeps Seton's home field advantage hopes in tact.

John Plocki – Deer Lakes

It took more than three quarters for visiting Deer Lakes and their quarterback, John Plocki to get going Saturday afternoon, but once they did, they were one dangerous deer. Plocki completed 10 of 21 passes for 162 yards and connected with Zach Bryner on scoring passes of 59 and 12 yards, both in the fourht quarter as the Lancers erased a 14-0 fourth quarter deficit to edge the Summit Academy Knights in a Class AA Allegheny Conference contest 18-14.

Cameron McCoy – South Side

They were four weeks away from a second straight winless season when Cameron McCoy decided to take matters into his own hands to end the long South Side skid. McCoy ran wild, rushing for 230 yards on 28 carries and scoring book ends touchdowns of 14-yards in the first quarter and 78-yards in the fourth quarter as the host Rams beat the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Chargers 28-7 for their first Class A Big 7 Conference win in two and a half years and end a 14-game losing streak.

Josh Dando – Laurel

Run happy Laurel was missing leading rusher Matt Conway for their Saturday road game at Western Beaver, so they opened things up on offense, which was sweet music to the ears of quarterback Josh Dando. Despite several dropped passes, Dando completed 8 of 14 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown, plus he rushed for 121 yards and scored on a 50-yard touchdown jaunt as the Spartans moved into a fourth place tie in the Class A Big 7 Conference with a 38-19 triumph over the Golden Beavers.

Josh Mundell – Carmichaels

Josh Mundell knew he likely wouldn't get to many carries in the second half against host Geibel, so he made the most of what he got early in what turned into an easy Class A Tri-County South Conference victory. Mundell rushed for over 100 yards and scored on touchdown runs of 47, 28 and 44 yards, all in the first quarter as the Mighty Mikes raced out to a 30-0 lead after one and cruised to a 48-15 victory over the winless Gators to keep the Mikes mighty playoff hopes alive.
